History of International Women's Day
The first International Women's Day was held on March 19, 1911. It was organized by the Socialist Party of America in response to the 1910 garment workers' strike in New York City. The strike lasted for two weeks and ended with the women winning better working conditions and pay. In 1913, Russian women held a demonstration on International Women's Day to demand the right to vote. In 1917, International Women's Day became a national holiday in Russia. After the Russian Revolution, international women's day was celebrated annually as a celebration of working women and their achievements. The United States did not recognize International Women's Day until 1975. Today, International Women's Day is observed in many countries around the world. It is a day to celebrate the progress that women have made, and to focus on the challenges that still need to be addressed.
