Who was Cesar Chavez?
Cesar Chavez was an American farmworker, labor leader, and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farmworkers Association (now the United Farm Workers union) in 1962. He led a series of strikes and boycotts against American agricultural companies in an effort to improve the working conditions and wages for farmworkers. Chavez's work helped to bring about significant changes in California's agriculture industry, including the introduction of minimum wage laws and improved health and safety standards. His legacy continues to inspire people around the world who are fighting against racial and economic discrimination especially for migrant farm workers.
Cesar Chavez Day is celebrated each year on his birthday, March 31st. The holiday is observed in many states across America, as well as in Mexico where Chavez was born. On this day, we remember the contributions of this great man and all that he fought for. Let us continue his work by standing up for the rights of workers and immigrants everywhere. Join us in celebrating Cesar Chavez Day on March 31st, 2022!
The Grape Strike
In 1965, Cesar Chavez led a historic strike and boycott against California grape growers. The workers were demanding better wages and working conditions, and the boycott was successful in getting many of the growers to agree to improve those conditions. The grape strike and boycott is often cited as one of the most successful campaigns in American labor history.
